Outbreak Ops Review & Gameplay Guide
So I just spent the last weekend playing Outbreak Ops, and I've got to say it was a pretty mixed bag for me. I went into it with pretty high expectations, I mean who doesn't love a good zombie shooter, right? But after putting in a bunch of hours, I'm left feeling a bit torn. On the one hand, the game looks and sounds amazing - the graphics are top notch and the sound design is super immersive. I found myself jumping out of my seat more than a few times when a zombie would sneak up behind me.
But on the other hand, the gameplay itself just felt kind of...samey. I mean, it's your standard zombie fare - run around, shoot zombies, collect ammo and health packs. It's not like that's a bad thing, per se, but it just didn't feel like Outbreak Ops brought anything new or interesting to the table. I felt like I was just going through the motions, you know? And the story, oh man...it's just so clichรฉ. You're a special ops team sent in to investigate some outbreak, and of course you're the only ones who can save the world. I mean, I've seen this movie before, and it was more interesting the first time around.
One thing that did stand out to me, though, was the co-op play. I played through the campaign with a few friends, and it was a total blast. We had a great time working together, setting up ambushes and taking down hordes of zombies. It's definitely the way to play the game, in my opinion - it adds a whole new level of strategy and excitement to the proceedings. But even with co-op, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were just doing the same things over and over again. I mean, how many times can you clear out a zombie-infested room before it gets old?
I also have to say that the level design was pretty lackluster. I mean, the environments looked great and all, but they just didn't feel very...alive, I guess. It was all just a bunch of corridors and rooms, with the occasional open area to break things up. And don't even get me started on the "puzzles" - I use the term loosely, because they were all just super simple and didn't really add anything to the game. It was just a bunch of "find the key to unlock the door" type stuff, which got old fast.
Despite all my complaints, though, I did have some fun with Outbreak Ops. Like I said, the co-op was a highlight, and there were a few moments where the game really shined. But overall, I just don't think it's a particularly great game. It's not bad, by any means - it's just...average. If you're a huge fan of zombie games, you might get a kick out of it, but for everyone else, I'd say it's a solid rental or a discount purchase. Maybe check it out if you've got some friends to play with, but otherwise, there are better games out there.
All in all, I'm a bit disappointed with Outbreak Ops. I was hoping for something a bit more...substantial, I guess. But hey, at least it was a decent way to pass the time, and like I said, the co-op was a lot of fun. If you're on the fence about it, I'd say wait for a sale or something - it's not worth full price, in my opinion. But hey, if you do end up picking it up, I hope you have more fun with it than I did.
